GTA IV To Surpass Halo 3
October 4, 2007 – 8:06 am
Halo 3 sold copies worth $170 million in its launch day in the US, surpassing most of the recent titles and even some blockbuster movies, like Spider-Man 3. That’s not all, as the Xbox 360 console sold twice as good, since Bungie’s hit came out. However Halo 3’s sales have not yet beaten Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas’ sales, a landmark in this area. In case you’re wondering why, just imagine the number of PS2 consoles available when San Andreas was launched and compare that to the Xbox 360 units sold so far. The difference is huge, thus explaining the huge sales figures in the case of Rockstar’s acclaimed title. Halo 3 doesn’t lag much behind, though, taking the second place in the record sales department.
The threat may once again come from Rockstar, who’ll hit, and hit hard with GTA IV, one of the most awaited titles of the year, I
would even dare to say, more anticipated than Halo 3. While Bungie’s product represented the end of a trilogy, GTA IV, stands for a new beginning and a revamp of the series, which lands straight on the next-gen consoles. Will the fourth installment in the main GTA series beat itself, surpassing San Andreas and pulling Halo 3 down to the third spot?
In the meantime, the Sony guys should realize that this title has a lot of potential, just like Halo 3 had in the case of the Xbox 360, doubling the console’s sales in the UK. Can Rockstar save Sony, who are struggling with the lack of popularity for their PS3? Since GTA IV is not a PS3 exclusive, being available on the Xbox 360 too, people might purchase one version or the other, many of them probably avoiding Sony’s next-gen device yet again, because of its price.
