LG.Philips Announces Rather Bulky “Ultra-Slim” 42-inch Full HD Panel for 2008As we can see almost on a daily basis, LCD technology is making some pretty important steps ahead, as the manufacturers are trying to come up with new models that provide increased image quality in a very small and thin form factor. And that’s exactly what LG.Phillips has in mind to do, as it has just announced that it developed a 42-inch Full HD 120Hz Panel, which, according to the company, is considered “ultra-slim”, despite of the fact that it’s actually 19.8-mm thick.

Thus, despite of its rather bulky dimensions, the panel is, at least according to the company, 40 percent thinner and 10 percent lighter than conventional 42-inch LCD TV panels. Moreover, despite its “slim” profile, the panel also incorporates 120Hz technology, which eliminates motion blur and full HD resolution, which is twice as sharp as normal HD resolution. Furthermore, LG.Philips LCD used a cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) backlight on this panel, which kept production costs lower than using a comparable LED backlight, but, in the same time, did nothing good for the overall contrast.

“Reducing the thickness of LCD panels and ultimately TVs is one area where we can add a great deal of value for consumers,” said Eddie Yeo, Executive Vice President and head of LG.Philips LCD’s TV business unit. “LG.Philips LCD will be the first company to launch an ultra- slim 42-inch panel, giving us a strong lead in the market for next generation TV panels. We will continue to develop slim LCD TV panels and expect to add additional offerings in this product line in 2008.”

LG.Philips plans to launch the new 42-inch TFT-LCD TV display at some point in 2008, but it remains to be seen whether it will actually manage to do, not to mention whether it will enjoy any level of success, taking into consideration the fact that the competition on the LCD displays’ market is a pretty stiff one and LG.Philips’ rivals have already showcased or announced even thinner models.
